An LA Style Launch for OG Arts Influencer Spike Dolomite’s Hilarious New Book TRUMPED UP
3 min read
A necessary & irreverent celebration of a new book that looks back at ‘Trump’s First Term and the Beginning of America’s End’
Last week RabbleRouse went to the quintessential LA-style Political Protest Party with some of our city’s most influential and badass creators hosted by Sandra Tsing Loh, Rebecca Constantino and Erika Schickel. The intimate backyard bash celebrated the launch of TRUMPED UP by local author, cartoonist, theatre-maker and Arts in Education icon, Spike Dolomite.
The celebration began with “A reading of the 27 Amendments” by Jerry Clarke dressed as Uncle Sam towering above the audience from the back porch stage on stilts. We were so moved by his reading and the audience reactions we propose that ‘The Reading of the Amendments’ becomes a new national tradition over the star spangled banner or pledge of allegiance.
Live music, a dramatic reading, deliciously funny snacks…
The show opened with the absolute funky groove of Jerry Clarke and the Abundance Band in an uplifting set that included songs from his recent album, Funcadelical Times now available on all the major streaming platforms.
A well crafted and dramatically funny reading of excerpts from Spike’s book Trumped Up: Trump’s First Term and the Beginning of America’s End was the headliner here. The script, TRUMPS FIRST TERM IN UNDER FIVE MINUTES was adapted for l’etage by Sandra Tsing Loh. The Trumped Up Angry Women’s Chorus featured: Erika Schickel, Rebecca Constantino, Annabelle Gurwitch, Gina Thornborough and Sandra Tsing Loh. LA Theatre Works should really commission this audio play ASAP.
Lisa Moncure, Carnal Circus‘ fabulous chanteuse recited a spoken word performance of “Dumpty Trumpty” through a megaphone early in the show before the LA based trio performed a rocking set of their sexy mix of jazz, blues, lounge & clown cabaret act. It was pure art.
James Hames won a copy of Dan McCrory’s book “Capitalism Killed the Middle Class” as the champion of the Protest Poster Contest with his brilliant drawing “Americalypse Now The horror, the horror”. Themed party snacks and beverages were passed on a silver platter as guests nibbled on small Wieners and mini-TACOs while sipping Mountain Valley Spring Water and White-Russians with vädkə. Sandra Tsing Loh and Stephanie Miller performed an hilarious Trump Piñata dance with Donnie Two-scoops favorite condiment. Guests departed with Voodoo doll party favors, a direct action in hand?
There was so much love at this event… Cathartic and good medicine, all of it.
