Bachelors Anonymous Featuring John Fleck “I’ve Got The Hunger”
Blood, Synth, and Free Speech: A 40+Year Los Angeles Resurrection
Tis the season to call upon the undead… “We are the Vampires! We are Immortal! We are the Chosen Ones!” was originally chanted at Los Angeles’s legendary Lhasa Club on Halloween night, 1984. The occasion, Donald Krieger and Kristian Hoffman’s inaugural Zombie Jamboree, an unholy gathering of the city’s queer avant-garde and art-punk elite. On stage, Los Angeles performance art provocateur John Fleck, the late underground icon Lance Loud, and Mary Lou Vozza (substituting for Charlotte McGuinness) delivered a one-off stage piece titled In a Viennese Vein.
I’ve Got the Hunger Music Video
Making vampiric cameo appearances alongside them were Rob Berg and David Hughes, two musicians on the threshold of unleashing their seminal synth-pop entity, Bachelors Anonymous. Gathered in that room was a holy order of L.A. subculture: Bruce Schwartz, Weba Garretson, Jerry Frankel, Tom Siegel, Tomata DuPlenty, Fayette Hauser, Krieger himself, and Hoffman’s blistering outfit, The Swinging Madisons.
After that night, In a Viennese Vein dissolved into local legend. The underlying instrumental backing tracks sat unrecorded, buried in the vaults like a supine bloodsucker in torpor, waiting. Two years ago, that 1984 ghost broke containment. Resurrected in late-summer 2024 as a studio recording with Fleck and Bachelors Anonymous, the track “I’ve Got The Hunger” was raised from its slumber, reviving the glory of underground blood, sweat, and synth.
Green Screens, AI Visuals, and Bloodsuckers
Bringing “I’ve Got The Hunger” into the visual realm required a bit of real-world logistics and cross-country travel. Rob Berg had relocated to Denver in March 2024, prompting an initial plan to shoot split green-screen footage in both Los Angeles and Denver. Berg envisioned the clip not as a literal re-creation of the 1984 Lhasa Club performance, but as a brand-new visual entity. Fate stepped in when filmmaker Armin Siljkovic, Berg’s longtime cinematic collaborator, passed through Denver on a cross-country documentary shoot. Siljkovic was immediately enlisted as director, cinematographer, camera operator, and editor.
Then, tragedy and timing collided: in August 2024, Milania Henley, a close friend whom Berg and Hughes had met in a 1984 choir, passed away. Flying out to Los Angeles together for her September memorial service, the Bachelors booked green-screen studio time at Dreaming Tree Studio in Burbank. Berg recruited a cast of intimate friends to play the vampire squad’s “victims,” while Jeffrey Nelson stepped in as production assistant. Except for the choreographed victim sequences, Siljkovic kept the shoot unscripted, directing physical movements on the green screen before taking the footage into post-production, where he was given total freedom to apply surreal AI visual effects.
The video stars, in order of appearance: John Fleck, Rob Berg, David Hughes, Deborah Rogers, Mary Allen, Randy LaBorde, and Donald Nollar. Production Assistant: Jeffrey Nelson. Director, Camera, Cinematographer, Editor: Armin Siljkovic. Filmed at Dreaming Tree Studio, Burbank, CA. Music performed and produced by Bachelors Anonymous with drums by John Lacques.
