Dressy Bessy, Kate Micucci, and Allison Wolfe join forces at the Alex Theatre for a one-night-only to Benefit Children in Need

Get ready for a one-night-only celebration where indie-pop melodies meet riot grrrl attitude in honor of an animation legend. On Saturday, August 8, the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale will host Betty Boop’s Birthday Bash for a Cause, a unique event presented by Saturday Morning Cartoons United™ in partnership with Fleischer Studios.

A Powerhouse Musical Lineup

For indie music enthusiasts, the headline act is a major draw. Denver’s own Dressy Bessy will bring their signature infectious melodies and retro-inspired sound to the stage. Known for their enduring DIY spirit and energetic live performances, the band has remained a staple of the indie-pop scene for over two decades.

Joining the musical bill is the legendary Allison Wolfe, co-founder of the groundbreaking riot grrrl band Bratmobile. As a pivotal voice in independent music, Wolfe will deliver a curated DJ set celebrating decades of punk and indie rock, adding a rebellious edge to the evening’s festivities.

Comedy, Animation, and Puppetry

The evening will be hosted by the multitalented Kate Micucci. Known for her work in The Big Bang Theory and as a voice actor for Scooby-Doo!, Micucci serves as the bridge between the worlds of music, comedy, and animation.

The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. outside the theater with performances by the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre. Attendees can also explore a Betty Boop pop-up marketplace featuring exclusive merchandise from Glamlite Cosmetics, Overlord Caps, and Whatever! Makes You Happy, as well as limited-edition event posters.

Inside the theater, the main program begins at 6:30 p.m. with a curated screening of Betty Boop classics and new works from emerging filmmakers, followed by the live concert.

Party for a Purpose

Beyond the entertainment, the night is dedicated to giving back. Proceeds from the event benefit two major organizations:

  • The Birthday Party Project: An organization that brings birthday celebrations to children experiencing homelessness.
  • Saturday Morning Cartoons United™: A 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of animation and strengthening communities through cultural experiences.
