Big Hopes of Mid-America
In moments of uncertainty, music has always risen to meet the times.
Big Hopes of Mid-America, Vol. 1 is a bold new compilation of protest songs and music of dissent created by Minnesota artists determined to turn frustration into action — and community into momentum. All proceeds from this compilation album are going to Minnesota Music Resistance and nonprofit organizations working to support local communities, defend human rights, and actively resist authoritarianism within the Minnesota community.
The project officially launches with a public listening party: Minnesota Music Resistance – Big Hopes of Mid-America – Compilation Listening Party. On March 29, 2026 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. If you’re in Minneapolis show up to hear this compilation album front to back at Hook & Ladder Theater (3010 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis) Everyone is invited – FREE – 21+. This isn’t just an album release — it’s a gathering. A call to show up. A reminder that music has always been one of our most powerful tools for connection and resistance.
Born out of urgency following the 2024 election, the Minnesota Music Resistance (MMR) collective emerged from a shared need for solidarity within the state’s vibrant music scene. Founder Paul Engebretson rallied a wide cross- section of the community — musicians, sound engineers, record store owners, radio and podcast hosts, writers, and lifelong fans — people who understand that a music scene is more than entertainment. It’s infrastructure. It’s refuge. It’s voice.
Still in its early stages, MMR is committed to finding meaningful ways to support human rights, inclusion, and the communities most vulnerable to rising authoritarian and nationalistic pressures. Big Hopes of Mid-America, Vol. 1 is its first major statement — and it’s loud.
An eclectic lineup of Minnesota artists
The compilation features an expansive and eclectic lineup of Minnesota artists: Dumptrunk, Sawtooth Witch, Flamin’ Oh’s, The Muatas, The Silent Treatment, The Heavy Sixers, The Flying T, Paul Metsa & Alan Sparhawk, Jim Walsh & The Dog Day Cicadas, Parishes, Institutional Green, Demolition Means Progress, Birdhole, 13 Howell, Leslie Rich and the Rocket Soul Choir, M.A.Y., Mary Strand, Edie Rae Baumgart, Jim Gruidl, Fret Rattles, Cindy Lawson, MILITZËR, Adam Levy, Craig Teiken, Amerikan Junk, The Daring Dew, High On Stress w/ Danny Murphy, Favourite Girl, Zach Ewald, The Buffalo Weavers.
