A deeply moving story

THRESHOLD is the breathtaking story of Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, the most decorated American cross-country skier ever, Jessie Diggins, and the struggle behind her smile– a painful fight with an eating disorder at the peak of her career. Americans were cheering for her triumph on Thursday, February 13th as Diggins battled through a bruised rib injury to win the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Interval 10K at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.

From the Olympic podium to the screen, a cinematically exquisite and deeply moving feature documentary about Diggins will premiere on Peacock Monday February 23rd. This is much more than a sports story; it’s a visceral, human account of vulnerability, stigma, and recovery, unfolding in real time. Through unprecedented access to Jessie and those closest to her, the film offers an intimate look into the complexity of a disorder that often hides in plain sight yet remains tragically underrepresented in film and misunderstood in care.

Visually stunning and gorgeously framed, THRESHOLD is directed and produced by Lars Brinkema & Torsten Brinkema with Executive Producers Torsten Brinkema and Patrick Dempsey and producers Mark Steele, Samantha Taylor. It was written by Lars Brinkema and edited by Yaniv Elani and JD Marlow. The music score was composed by Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore. Directors of Photography are Torsten Brinkema & Lars Brinkema.

The pursuit of perfection

THRESHOLD unfolds over the course of a single, high-stakes season, while moving fluidly through time to reveal the deeper roots of Jessie’s struggle. Present-day vérité—embedded with Jessie and the U.S. Ski Team—intercuts with formative moments from her past, tracing how a relentless pursuit of perfection took hold early in her career as she internalized the belief that control of body mass was essential to success.

What follows is not a retrospective, but a season lived in real time– where progress and pressure coexist. From grueling races above the Arctic Circle to the first World Cup on American snow in more than twenty-five years, the film tracks a season of mounting pressure at the highest level of sport. THRESHOLD is ultimately a film about hope. By allowing herself to be seen, Jessie offers something rare to those living in silence; proof that relapse is not failure, that asking for help is not weakness.

By committing to the hard work of recovery, Jessie reclaims her health– and her dreams. She remains in the sport she loves, learning how to balance ambition with care while speaking out about mental health and athlete well-being.

Most decorated American Cross Country Skier in history

Widely known for her ability to go deep into the ‘Pain Cave’ in the closing moments of some of the most grueling races in the world, Jessie has developed an legendary ability to never, ever, quit.  As a result, she has won everything there is to win in skiing, most often more than once, and is the reigning two-time World Champion.  She will compete in the 2026 Olympic Games in an extraordinary six different events, looking to further cement her ‘Best Ever’ legacy.

Having learned to manage a serious eating disorder, Jessie is an outspoken mental health advocate.  Having seen the effect of global warming on her sport over her 15 year career, she is passionate about sustainability and environmental issues.  As one of the most dominant athletes in the history of Team USA, she speaks from deep experience about resilience, overcoming adversity, teamwork, mental toughness and being at your best when it matters most.

Lars Brinkema: Director, Producer, Writer, Cinematographer

Growing up in Minneapolis, Lars found his passion in film and photojournalism, documenting the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. Witnessing firsthand the unjust representation of the protest movement sparked the idea for his first film, I Pray—an award-winning short documentary about the Minneapolis community’s resilience and collective fight for justice.

This foundation in authentic, personal storytelling informed his approach to documenting what would become Threshold, his feature-length directorial debut. When Jessie entrusted him with telling her mental health story, it became more than a film; it was a responsibility rooted in his own closeness to people whose lives have been shaped by the same struggle. Now based in Los Angeles, Lars is drawn to intimate, character-driven stories that foster reflection, dialogue, and change.

Torsten Brinkema: Director, Executive Producer, Cinematographer

Torsten Brinkema is a Minnesota-born artist based in Brooklyn, New York. His work explores the fragile balance between people and their environments through films, still photography, and sculpture. As a former collegiate ski racer, Torsten spent years on the snow competing against the best in the Northeast, all the while developing his visual practice in the landscapes that sport took him. With two award-winning short films behind him, he set out to merge his lifelong connection to skiing with a long-form film that could fully realize his creative vision. Drawing on his experience racing alongside elite athletes—and a deep sense of empathy—he built a story rooted in trust. Threshold ultimately became a journey far beyond what he imagined, both as a filmmaker and as a witness.
