How Grassroots Organizing Secured Millions in Lifesaving Funding to Protect California’s LGBTQ+ Sanctuary Status.

Last month in a powerful win for equality and grassroots organizing, Governor Gavin Newsom approved a state budget that marks one of the most significant public investments in LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing in California’s history. At a time of devastating cuts and attacks at the federal level, California is standing firm as a sanctuary for the community.

A Grassroots Victory for California’s LGBTQ+ Communities

This victory was the result of months of tireless advocacy from the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Policy & Community Building team alongside a coalition of partners across the state. From knocking on doors and building coalitions to flooding representatives with thousands of emails and taking the fight directly to the capital for Advocacy Day in Sacramento, the community made its voice heard.

The grassroots, community-driven effort has secured real, life-changing results through the following budget allocations:

Historic Funding for the LGBTQ+ Community Center Fund

One of the most significant achievements is the creation of the first LGBTQ+ Community Center Fund. This is a historic $10 million investment, sponsored by the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, designed to support a network of community centers. These centers provide essential healthcare, housing, and other lifesaving services to hundreds of thousands of Californians every year.

Critical Investments in Transgender Healthcare and HIV/AIDS Prevention

The budget also directly addresses the specific health needs of the community with two major commitments:

• Transgender Health Care: $26 million has been allocated specifically to protect and ensure access to medically necessary care for transgender individuals.
• Ending the HIV Epidemic: Nearly $1 billion has been committed over the next five years for HIV/AIDS care and prevention services.

Beyond the Budget: A Lifeline for Vulnerable Californians

These are far more than just line items on a spreadsheet; they represent a vital lifeline. In addition to the healthcare investments, the budget includes critical resources for survivors of violence, reproductive care, and homelessness services. For unhoused youth seeking safety and shelter, these investments represent a tangible shift toward a more equitable future.
