Holiday Movie Time is here! Breakup Season promises to be a new Christmas favorite.

H. Nelson Tracey’s debut feature Breakup Season is now on a limited theatrical run before it is released on TVOD Dec. 6th. This bittersweet holiday romantic drama garnered 29 awards on its festival run and secured a distribution deal with Santa Monica based, Buffalo 8.

Breakup Season follows Ben (Chandler Riggs, The Walking Dead), an unemployed yet ambitious 24-year-old, as he brings his girlfriend Cassie (Samantha Isler, MOLLY’S GAME) home to meet his family in rural Oregon for Christmas. A late-night argument upon their arrival leads to them breaking up, but due to some extreme winter weather the newly minted exes end up stuck together for the rest of the holiday season.

Tracey developed the Filmmaker Residency program at the Eastern Oregon Film Festival in 2020, with the goal of bringing film productions to the region. He was one of the program’s inaugural participants in 2021, writing a screenplay for a story set in La Grande, Oregon that would later become Breakup Season.

He said, “A first breakup is a monumental life experience of bereavement,” says Tracey. “I had not seen films that covered an early twenties breakup in the way that I knew most people, including myself, experienced it: as an essential step in the modern coming of age story. I wanted to depict this with sincerity; there’s humor, yes, but ultimately it’s grounded in a sense of realism not often seen in holiday fare. This authenticity guided me to tell something both universal and hyper specific.
