Romanian Box Office Phenomenon THE YELLOW TIE, starring John Malkovich, will have its North American Premiere at Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Friday, February 6.

Directed by the subject’s son, Serge Ioan Celebidachi, THE YELLOW TIE arrives in the United States on the heels of an unprecedented box office performance in its native Romania. Released on November 14, 2025, the film became a massive cultural phenomenon, holding the #1 spot for multiple weeks. Most notably, the film achieved rare cross-generational appeal, emerging as the second highest-grossing film of 2025—outperforming every major Hollywood franchise with the sole exception of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

THE YELLOW TIE recounts the epic journey of a boy with a dream whose lifelong refusal to conform shaped an extraordinary odyssey—from exile, homelessness, and surviving persecution during WWII to becoming the youngest-ever conductor of the revered Berlin Philharmonic. It is a story of resilience, the refusal to compromise, and the high price of genius.

The cast

The film stars John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons) and Miranda Richardson (Tom & Viv), both double Oscar nominees; double BAFTA winner Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings); Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief); and Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders). Anton Lesser (Andor) and Charlie Rowe (Rocketman) complete the cast.

The film was directed by Serge Ioan Celebidachi, who also co-wrote the screenplay with James Olivier. The film’s producers are Adela Vrînceanu Celebidachi, Cristina Dobrițoiu, James Olivier, Andrei Boncea, and Hollywood veteran Robert W. Cort (Mr. Holland’s Opus). Elevating the production to a global standard is an elite creative team including celebrated cinematographer Peter Menzies Jr., ACS, costume designer Alessandro Lai, and Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics Designer Lynda Armstrong and complemented by an evocative score from Kathryn & Kim Allen Kluge. The film has a running time of 145 minutes. THE YELLOW TIE is an Oblique Media production, co-produced with Safe Frame, Avanpost Media, Frame Film, and Frame Film Illustrious Studio.

THE YELLOW TIE was shot entirely in Romania by a team of over 300 professionals and features five national orchestras that meticulously recreated Celibidache’s historic concerts in iconic venues, including Philadelphia, Buenos Aires, Venice, Bucharest, and Berlin. Developed over seven intensive years of research and production, THE YELLOW TIE stands as one of the most ambitious Romanian film productions to date.
