Directed by Bill Sehres | Produced by Heidi Appe & Allen Levin
Two Roads Productions to present Eugene O’Neill’s enduring heartbreaker Hughie, directed by Bill Sehres and stars Dan Frischman with Andy Forrest and Scott MacDonell alternating in the role of Charlie Hughes. This American classic has one preview on March 28th with the official opening on Saturday, March 29th at Two Roads Theatre (4348 Tujunga Ave., Studio City, CA). The show runs through April 20th with tickets available at OnStage411.
In 1942, Nobel laureate O’Neill took a break from writing Long Day’s Journey Into Night, to pen the one-act, Hughie which he unfortunately didn’t live to see produced. Jason Robards starred as Erie. when It was first performed on Broadway in 1964. Hughie has played on Broadway three times since it’s initial run and as recently as 2016.
Hughie is set in a seedy hotel lobby in New York City during a hot summer night in 1928. Small-time gambler Erie Smith returns from a four-day drunk, and he boasts of his betting wins and carnal scores to the new night clerk. Slowly, however, his slick veneer thins, revealing a man broken over the death of his only friend — the hotel’s previous night clerk. The playwright masterfully draws a heartbreaking portrait of longing and loss, of the loneliness of the human condition, and the desperate hunger to overcome it.
Performances are Friday & Saturday 8 pm and Sunday 7 pm. Running time: 65 minutes, General Admission: $35. Students/Seniors $25. (Use Promo Code: 410 for Student/Senior discount) Preview tickets (3/28): $20. Tickets on sale at OnStage411.
