THE DIFFICULTY ADJUSTMENT Opens in Beverly Hills
Allen Barton’s World Premiere Play Explores Financial Crises and Free Speech
A compelling new drama tackling economic turbulence, free speech, and the price of standing one’s ground is set to make its world premiere in Los Angeles. Written and directed by Allen Barton, THE DIFFICULTY ADJUSTMENT opens this week at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, running from November 6 through November 29, 2026.
The complex drama weaves together two distinct financial crises across two decades. In 2008, Sterling, an economics professor navigating the global financial collapse, may also secretively be Satoshi Nakamoto—the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Fast-forward to 2020–2021, and Ethan, a Los Angeles theater owner, struggles through COVID-19 lockdowns, financial repression, and the modern threat of “de-banking.” Though Sterling and Ethan never meet face-to-face, their trajectories are deeply intertwined as Ethan and his wife face the fallout of their choices, examining the true cost of speaking out in post-COVID America.
