William T. Carson + Emilio Lobato: The Space Between

Now through March 21, 2026 at Nüart Gallery | Bergamot Station
I recently visited the Nüart Gallery at Bergamot Station and was deeply moved by the two-person exhibition, The Space Between, featuring William T. Carson and Emilio Lobato. The exhibition title refers to both a physical and conceptual condition: the negative space where light, material, and meaning emerge.
After over fifty years of appreciating art, experiences like this remind me why I remain so passionate about the medium. Both artists draw inspiration from earth elements in fascinating ways. Carson’s delicate copper installations reimagine mushrooms in metal, appearing to emit a light of their own. There is a sense of measuring time, not unlike a sundial, as the space between each fixture delicately bleeds reflected light into the surrounding surfaces.

These creations are beautifully balanced by the grounded compositions of Lobato, whose assemblages utilize vintage electricians’ measuring sticks and traditional materials. His muted colors are reminiscent of a Japanese winter palette, with compositions that feel like a sophisticated blend of Bauhaus and Braque. Staring into each work, there is a sense of a future artifact—a kind of timelessness that is both familiar and strange.
There is a grounding in this exhibition that is both beautiful and calming. It allows us to ponder the essential element of what lies between or, to quote e.e. cummings, “what’s keeping the stars apart.”
I strongly suggest taking some time to visit the gallery and re-center yourself through this show.
