A Vibrant Exploration of Family, Identity, and Cultural Memory Arrives in the Arts District Featuring Omari Booker, Daryll Cumbie – The Surgical Artist, and Group Show ‘ICONS’
Contemporary art gallery Band of Vices is hosting a weekend launch in the Historic Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, presenting two solo debuts alongside a powerful multi-artist group exhibition. Opening Saturday, October 24, and running through November 21, the gallery will premiere Think Again by Omari Booker, Pieces of Me by Daryll Cumbie-The Surgical Artist, and ICONS, a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Chris Cane, Gregg Chadwick, ShowzArt, Bryan Lee Tilford, and Chidi Ukwuoma. Together, these three concurrent showcases establish a compelling conversation around heritage, personal lineage, and the enduring symbols that shape collective identity. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 24, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, sponsored by The Prisoner Wine Company.
Solo Debut of Omari Booker
Leading the weekend’s openings is the debut solo exhibition from Nashville-based artist Omari Booker. Titled Think Again, the collection explores how televised media and intimate family dynamics intersect to frame our self-perception. Booker takes as his initial touchstone the familiar suburban ideal represented by The Cosby Show and the Huxtable household, juxtaposing these pop-culture benchmarks against his own deeply personal history and lived experiences. By contrasting manufactured nostalgia with raw, authentic memories, Booker invites viewers to reexamine the cultural narratives that informed their upbringing.

Expanding the Narrative Voice
Running alongside Booker’s debut, Daryll Cumbie—performing and painting under the moniker The Surgical Artist—presents Pieces of Me. Through vibrant, stylized figurative works, Cumbie explores Black childhood, youthful imagination, and the tenderness found in everyday moments of connection. His visual language blends expressive color palettes, heavy outlines, and intentionally childlike draftsmanship to create dynamic compositions charged with movement and optimism. Completing the gallery takeover, the group exhibition ICONS gathers five distinct artistic voices to interrogate how cultural influence takes root across generations. Artists Chris Cane, Gregg Chadwick, ShowzArt, Bryan Lee Tilford, and Chidi Ukwuoma employ varied mediums and personal vantage points to consider the symbols, memories, and figures that command reverence in modern society.
