Acclaimed Artist Claire B. Cotts Exhibition: UNFOLDING Opens at Nüart Gallery

Layering, Intuition, and Geometric Structure

Nüart Gallery is proud to announce its upcoming solo exhibition, “Unfolding,” featuring new paintings by the acclaimed artist Claire B. Cotts. This captivating showcase will be on view from June 20 through July 11, 2026, at the gallery’s location within the Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica.

The Art of the Layered Process

The exhibition, titled Unfolding, explores the delicate balance between geometric structure and intuitive mark-making. Cotts’s work is characterized by rounded forms and vertical passages that move across the picture plane, creating a rhythmic juxtaposition of movement and stillness.

Each piece is the result of a rigorous, physical process involving successive layers of paint, scraping, drawing, and revision. These built-up surfaces serve as a visual history of their own creation, allowing the final compositions to “unfold” for the viewer through their unique color, texture, and rhythm.

Abstracted Nature and the Body

While the works are fundamentally abstract, they remain deeply rooted in observations of the natural world and human physiology. Visitors will find visual structures informed by:

• Breath and pulse
• Water and shifting light
• Landscape and spatial tensions

Rather than direct representations, these elements are transformed into luminous passages and darker areas that create a dynamic interplay of weight and balance, ultimately organizing the viewer’s perception of the experience.

About Claire B. Cotts

Claire B. Cotts is a Berkeley-based artist with an extensive background in fine arts. She earned her MFA from the University of California, Berkeley, and her BFA from Oberlin College. A former Fulbright Fellow, Cotts spent a year living and working in Turkey, an experience that informs her internationally exhibited work. Her paintings are held in numerous prestigious public and private collections.
