Culture, Borderline, Layered Time a Conversation with Artist Michael Arata
There will be a conversation between artist Michael Arata and LA based art critic Mat Gleason at Serious Topics Gallery in Inglewood on Saturday, April 25 at 2 PM. Michael Arata’s exhibit CULTURE, BORDERLINE, LAYERED TIME is currently on view through May 16th at Serious Topics. Arata’s paintings diagram human interaction. Fresh ideas come from dismantling belief systems and rebuilding them. Past and present blur into an unknown future. Nothing is resolved, but nothing is lost either.

Michael Arata (b. 1955, San Francisco) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He received his BFA and MFA from San Jose State University and has taught painting, drawing and art history at Loyola Marymount University, East Los Angeles College, and West Los Angeles College, where he also served as gallery director and curator. His work has been exhibited widely in Los Angeles and internationally, including solo exhibitions in Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, Salamanca, and Tokyo, and has been reviewed in the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, Artillery, and Artweek, among others. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Mat Gleason is a prominent Los Angeles-based art critic, curator, and gallerist. In 1992, Gleason founded Coagula Art Journal, a punk-inspired zine that gained notoriety for its tabloid-style gossip, sharp reviews, and willingness to critique powerful art-world figures. In 2012, he transitioned into the role of gallerist, opening Coagula Curatorial in Los Angeles’s Chinatown. The gallery hosted significant exhibitions by artists such as Karen Finley, Kim Dingle, Gronk, and Llyn Foulkes. He is actively critiquing art on social media and curating pop-up exhibitions around Los Angeles.
