David J Breathes New Life into Archival Gems with Tracks From the Attic Revisited
Bauhaus and Love and Rockets co-founder partners with Independent Project Records
David J, the iconic co-founder of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, has officially released his latest studio album, Tracks From the Attic Revisited, via Independent Project Records (IPR).
The project represents a “second life” for ten songs selected from David J’s 2024 triple LP box set of home recordings. While the original demos captured the raw, experimental meanderings of a young songwriter, Tracks From the Attic Revisited presents these tracks as “…gathered up, nurtured and tended” into a full bloom, reimagined through the lens of a seasoned artist who has mastered the art of “pruning”.
A “Stellar Combo” in the Studio
Produced by David J and recorded at Ear Gallery Music in Los Angeles, the album features a world-class lineup of musicians who helped transform original home demos into high-fidelity studio tracks. The result is an arresting distillation of David J’s eclectic influences, moving from late ’70s New Wave to a “country and Nick Drake-like romanticism”.

The featured performers include:
- Jason Roberts (Spoon, Daniel Johnston) on guitar.
- Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) on congas.
- David Raven (Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle) on drums.
- Robert “Smokey” Miles (Bob Dylan) on accordion.
- John Courage (lap steel) and Dan Clucas (trumpet).
- Jon Bernstein (piano, organ) and Tony Green (bass).
The Independent Project Records Legacy
For this release, David J has partnered with Independent Project Records, a label renowned among collectors for its bespoke packaging and extraordinary letterpress artwork. Founded in 1980 by musician and artist Bruce Licher, the label is famous for its hand-printed covers created on a vintage two-ton hand-fed letterpress. Licher’s design work has earned a Grammy nomination and includes iconic covers for bands like R.E.M., Stereolab, and Silversun Pickups.
