Why McKinnon Powell’s New Solo Show ‘6 Out of 10’ is the Dark Comedy You Need
From Savannah to the Spotlight: A Raw Theatrical Journey Through Love, Politics, and Self-Reclamation
This June, Weston Frankie Productions and Soaring Solo Studios present the world premiere of 6 Out of 10, a darkly comedic solo show written and performed by McKinnon Powell. Directed and developed by the award-winning Jessica Lynn Johnson, this production offers a “raw, theatrical journey through love, politics, trauma, and self-reclamation”.
In the competitive landscape of Los Angeles theatre, finding a voice that resonates is rare. But when a raw, southern-born storyteller teams up with a leading force in the solo theatre community, the result is nothing short of electric.
A Search for Validation in the Heart of Hollywood
Set against the high-stakes backdrop of the 2016 election, 6 Out of 10 follows a gay actor’s search for validation through a whirlwind of “various lovers, family ghosts, and the entertainment industry”. Powell, who moved to Los Angeles fifteen years ago from Savannah, Georgia, draws on his own history of being “raised in the South and shaped by religious expectations” to explore the profound cost of outsourcing self-worth.
Powell is a seasoned writer and actor with an MFA in writing for visual media; his screenwriting has already earned him accolades as a Screencraft Quarterfinalist. In this production, he uses dynamic multimedia, eccentric characters, and deeply personal monologues to connect with audiences through the universal human experience.
Directed by A Leading Force in Solo Theatre
The production is guided by Jessica Lynn Johnson, the Founder and CEO of Soaring Solo LLC and winner of Best National Solo Artist. Johnson’s influence on the solo theatre scene is immense:
- Award-Winning Track Record: She has co-created over 75 solo shows and has earned prestigious honors such as Top of Fringe and multiple Encore Producer Awards.
- Global Expertise: Johnson has toured and taught internationally for over a decade, with her work appearing at NYC’s Theatre Row and festivals in Germany and Amsterdam.
- Community Leadership: She remains a pillar of the local arts scene, serving as a Board Member for the LA Women’s Theatre Festival and teaching a weekly FREE one-person show development class in Los Angeles.
