Matter and Memory: Pasadena Artist Deena Capparelli Debuts New Exhibition in Mid-City LA

Merging land art, ecology, and botany in a new solo exhibit at Matter Studio Gallery through October 18.

A new contemporary art exhibition featuring Pasadena-based artist Deena Capparelli, titled Matter and Memory, is set to open at Matter Studio Gallery on September 20, 2026. Located in Mid-City Los Angeles, the gallery will host the solo show through October 18, 2026. 

Regular gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A live Artist Talk moderated by fellow artist and activist Yrneh Gabon will take place on October 4, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Deena Capparelli is a prominent California painter and educator. Raised in the agricultural landscape of Rancho Cucamonga, Capparelli developed a lifelong fascination with both wild and cultivated environments. Her landscape paintings, site-specific installations, and interdisciplinary collaborations heavily investigate the history of land art, ecology, geography, and botany. Since the mid-1980s, her work has been showcased nationally, including long-term collective projects across the Mojave Desert and Inland Empire. Her recent series merges rigorous ecological histories with imaginative, speculative fiction.
