Documentary “We Are Animals” to Debut at Marina Del Rey Film Festival This Weekend
An immersive and emotionally resonant call for compassion and coexistence featuring Moby, Nikki Glaser, and Allison Pill
The Marina Del Rey Film Festival officially returns to Los Angeles this weekend, running from June 18 through June 26, 2026. A highlight of this year’s lineup is the premiere of “We Are Animals,” a compelling documentary from the nonprofit organization Lady Freethinker (LFT). Produced by LFT founder Nina Jackel and directed by Kirk Murray and Nicholas Tana, the film examines the historical roots of animal cruelty and explores the modern systems that allow exploitation to continue. By highlighting the similarities between humans and non-human species, the creators hope to encourage viewers to consider how everyday choices contribute to animal suffering while offering a vision of hope for a more compassionate future.
Exposing the Systems of Exploitation
Producer Nina Jackel notes that the documentary was born from a “deep urgency” to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. This sentiment is shared by director Kirk Murray, a visually driven filmmaker whose work has been recognized at more than 40 festivals worldwide. Murray describes the project as an immersive and emotionally resonant call to action, designed to prompt audiences to ask difficult questions about our coexistence with other species.
A Star-Studded Advocacy for Change
The film’s narrative is supported by a high-profile group of scientists, celebrities, and animal advocates, including Moby, Nikki Glaser, Allison Pill, Peter Singer, Peter Egan, Elaine Hendrix, and Milo Runkle. One particularly moving account comes from Renee King-Sonnen, the founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, who explains how her husband’s cattle ranch was transformed into a sanctuary after a calf named Rowdy Girl inspired them to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Beyond individual stories, the film highlights the legislative and grassroots efforts of organizations such as Animal Equality, Apex Advocacy, the LA Vegan Food Bank, and BIPOC Animal Activism, all of which are working to dismantle the systems of oppression facing the animal world.
Lady Freethinker’s Mission: From Investigation to Action
This documentary is a cornerstone of Lady Freethinker’s broader mission to end animal cruelty. Described as a “change-making and unafraid” nonprofit, LFT works globally through investigations, news reporting, and citizen actions. In addition to its advocacy, the organization provides direct, life-saving support—including food, veterinary care, and shelter—to rescued animals in urgent need.
