Ever Wondered “What If?” Chromolume Theatre Brings ‘If/Then’ to the Zephyr!

Have you ever looked back and wondered how one tiny choice—like which park bench you chose or which friend you called—could have totally changed your life? This July, Chromolume Theatre is bringing those big “what if” questions to life with their production of the musical If/Then at the Zephyr Theatre. It’s the second show in their “Season of Identity and Expression,” and it’s the perfect summer watch for anyone who’s ever stood at a crossroads.

Wasn’t this show a big deal on Broadway?

It definitely was! Written by the powerhouse team of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (who have both Pulitzer Prizes and Tonys on their shelves), If/Then hit Broadway in 2014. It ran for a full year and scooped up two Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Original Score. Now, you can catch this award-winning musical in LA.

What’s the story of ‘If/Then’ actually about?

The show follows a woman in her late 30s who’s headed back to New York City for a fresh start after a divorce. But here’s the cool part: the story actually follows two different paths her life could take at the exact same time. It’s a deep dive into choice, chance, and fate, showing us that while our decisions matter, every path we take is going to have its own share of joy, struggle, and room for a brand-new beginning.

Who is in the cast and creative team for ‘If/Then’?

There’s a ton of talent bringing this story to life! The show is directed by Brayden Hade (who also handled the cool scenic and costume designs), with Isaac Schanno Johnson leading the music.

  • On Stage: You’ll see an ensemble featuring Jon Armijo, Ryan Axberg, Keenan Carver, Renee Cohen, Quin Domalaon, Danielle Johnson, Shaheen Kapambwe, Joelle Lewis, Natalie Luna, Nadia Salina Salvia, Stephanie Saunders, Jewell Valentin, Michael Vandie, and Judd Yort. Amy Melendrez and Jason Rivera are ready to step in as understudies.

  • Behind the Scenes: The vibe is set by lighting designer Devin Harris and sound designer James Esposito, with help from assistant director Ellie Rodriguez and intimacy director Mary Zastrow. Keeping everything running smoothly are stage manager Mara Aguilar and assistant Deziree White-Virk.
