The new single is rooted in exploratory jazz and infused with elements of fusion, dub, psychedelia, and funk

Darryl Jenifer, the legendary bassist and founding member of hardcore innovators Bad Brains, has released a new single, “Loves Harmony.” This sprawling, collaborative composition offers a deep dive into the adventurous spirit of his forthcoming instrumental album, The Weather Channel, arriving July 17 via Org Music.

Deep Roots

While Jenifer is synonymous with redefining hardcore music, this project is less of a pivot and more of a homecoming. Before Bad Brains ever played a note of punk, they began in 1976 in Washington D.C. as a jazz fusion quartet called Mind Power. The Weather Channel honors this evolution, applying the same “boundary-breaking mindset” that defined his early career to a richly textured world of exploratory jazz, fusion, dub, and funk.

Elite Collaborations and Chemistry

The new single, “Loves Harmony,” highlights the “remarkable chemistry” of a powerhouse quartet led by Jenifer and featuring: John Medeski (Keyboards), Ben Perowsky (Drums/Percussion) and Karma “Chogyi” Marco (Guitar)

The track undergoes a profound transformation in the hands of the late jazz legend Jack DeJohnette, whose melodica work anchors the recording. Alongside him, the late, acclaimed composer Karl Berger weaves emotional string arrangements that wrap incredible depth and warmth around the improvisational grooves.

Reimagining the Bad Brains Legacy

Rather than simply revisiting his past, Jenifer retextures it. The 11-track album includes nine original compositions alongside fresh jazz reinterpretations of two Bad Brains classics: “Sacred Love II” and “Re-Ignition II“.

Throughout the record, listeners will find “echoes of punk urgency” and dub-heavy rhythms drifting through a foundation of adventurous ensemble playing. It marks Jenifer’s first solo effort since his 2010 debut, In Search of Black Judas, and signals a new chapter driven by constant curiosity.
