The inaugural Los Angeles Indie Book Crawl invites you to reject the algorithms, hit the pavement, and discover the creative hubs keeping LA’s soul intact. Get ready to map out the ultimate literary road trip.

The weavers of the future chapters aren’t sitting in corporate boardrooms, they are browsing the stacks, arguing over poetry, and keeping the counter-culture alive in our neighborhood bookshops. In a city connected by endless freeways but fueled by independent thought, our local bookstores are the ultimate sanctuaries. And this July, thirteen of them are banding together to stage a beautiful, bookish rebellion.

The Map of the Rebellion

Our city is a sprawling mosaic of stories. To map this crawl is to map the very soul of Los Angeles. From Manhattan Beach to Montrose, West Hollywood to Westchester, and Studio City to Pasadena, thirteen independent bastions of culture are joining forces.

This is a network of community sanctuaries waiting to be discovered:

The Valley Hubs:

  • Find curation and community at Annabelle’s Book Club LA (Studio City), or make a pilgrimage to Once Upon A Time (Montrose), proudly standing as America’s Oldest Children’s Bookstore.

The Westside & Coast:

  • Breathe in the ocean air at Diesel, A Book Store (Santa Monica) and Pages a bookstore (Manhattan Beach), or dive into the generational magic of Children’s Book World & CBW Teens & Adults (West LA).

The Heart of Culver City:

  • A powerhouse trio awaits within walking distance. Fuel up at Village Well Books & Coffee, find radical inspiration at Malik Books, and lose yourself in the passion of The Ripped Bodice, LA’s premier Romantic Bookstore.

The Strip & The Jewel:

  • Stand on the historic pavement of West Hollywood with Book Soup, legendary bookseller to the great and famous, or head south to discover The Book Jewel thriving in the heart of Westchester.

The Literary Core:

  • Walk the historic aisles of Chevalier’s Books (Larchmont Village), bask under the iconic tree at Skylight Books (Los Feliz), or cross the Arroyo to pay respects to the monumental institution that is Vroman’s Bookstore (Pasadena).

Ditch the Traffic: The Eco-Rebel’s Guide

Don’t let the latest closure of the Strait of Hormuz stop you. You can save your gas money for books and easily hit a massive chunk of this crawl using the LA Metro system instead of your car. Grab a TAP card, skip the parking gridlock, and map out your rail-and-bus adventure:

The K Line & E Line Treasure Trove:

  • Take the Metro to Culver City Station (E Line) or Leimert Park Station (K Line) to easily access the Culver City hub.

The B Line (Red) Core:

  • Hop on the B Line to the Vermont/Sunset Station and walk just a couple blocks to hit Skylight Books in Los Feliz.

The A Line (Gold)

  • Institutional Stop: Ride the A Line directly into Pasadena and hop off at Del Mar Station or Memorial Park Station to walk right into Vroman’s Bookstore.

The Passport Challenge: Claim Your Reward

You’re on a mission. To sweeten the journey, the crawl operates on a passport system designed to reward your dedication to local culture:

Secure the Passport:

  • Walk into any participating shop, make an initial purchase of at least $10, and claim your official Book Crawl Passport.

Collect the Stamps:

  • Every time you discover a new store on the list and make a minimum $10 purchase, you get a new stamp.

The Ultimate Grand Prize:

  • For the truly dedicated who collect stamps from all 13 locations, glory awaits. You will be entered to win the ultimate literary jackpot: a $25 gift card to every single store on the crawl. That is a $325 independent bookstore bounty to fuel your reading list for the rest of the year.

Hit the Pavement

The algorithms want to tell you what to read. The megalomaniacal mega-corporations want you to stay on your couch. This July, choose the streets, choose the community, and choose the independent spirits keeping the story of Los Angeles alive.

The inaugural Los Angeles Indie Book Crawl will run from July 24–26, featuring 13 independent bookstores across the city to promote local reading and community engagement. Participants can collect stamps at each location to enter a grand prize drawing for a $25 gift card from every store, totaling a $325 value. Whether you are hitting the freeways or mapping your route along the Metro rail lines, that grand prize bounty ought to cover your books, gas, TAP card fares, and a tall iced coffee!

Fill up your tank, load up your TAP card, grab a friend, and we’ll see you in the stacks.
