Minneapolis Band AGNES UNCAGED Releases Beautifully Surreal Masterpiece CYANOTYPE
3 min read
Minneapolis band Agnes Uncaged will release their beautifully surreal and thought provoking new album, Cyanotype this Friday, January 23rd. The band, formerly called Creeping Charlie, has received acclaim across the Midwest for their guitar-driven, cinematic indie rock. Group lead Julia Eubanks was hailed as “one of the Twin Cities most promising young songwriters” by critic Chris Riemenschneider (Minnesota Star Tribune) and one of First Avenue’s Best New Bands of 2022!
Cyanotype, is truly a work of art and the band was so wise to work with renowned producer John Agnello of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago, the album is described as a blue impression of white-hot moments in early adulthood. Agnello’s craftsmanship along with the mix by Brian Deck, Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine masterfully brings out the bands big textured guitar driven sound. This proves an exquisite match in accentuating their signature guitar hooks and narrative lyricism.
Agnes, a rabbit apparition, came to Eubanks on a hike through the French Alps and she felt her fearful aversion to releasing music dissolve. Like the rabbit superimposed over the mountain scape, Agnes Uncaged’s lyrics elicit a dance between the surreal and literal. Sisters Julia (Vocals and Guitar) and Esmé Eubanks (Bass), Jack Malone (Drums), and Cole Benson (Guitar) balance grittiness and prettiness to conjure a world of nostalgia, drawing inspiration from ’90s Pacific Northwest grunge.
The song Philosophy Test elucidates an ironic multiple choice exam and explores the dangers of accepting objective truths shaped by me and thousands of years ago. Guitars on Paperdoll form a crunchy wall of sound behind a description of a two dimensional relationship. Agnes Uncaged presents a new era with this ambitious record that won’t be pinned down, and doesn’t need to be.
Agnes Uncaged let RabbleRouse News know that while they’re really excited to release this album, they are living with the reality of so much that is happening in the Twin Cities. They want to help their neighbors as much as possible and Julia is delivering food to families who need it. Now the band is donating all the money from ticket sales from their Cyanotype Album Release Show on January 31 at 7th Street Entry (701 North 1st Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, 55403) to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota AND they are getting matched, so if they sell it out (as they are on track to) it will raise over $3k!!
So if you’re in Minneapolis BUY A TICKET, go see the show and if you’re not in the Twin Cities please donate to Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee – Education Fund .
