Sunny Taylor Draws on Overlooked Surfaces in ‘Connections’ at Nüart Gallery a New Exhibition in Santa Monica
Exhibition opens March 21 – April 11 in Santa Monica
Connections, a new exhibition by Sunny Taylor opens this weekend at Nüart Gallery in Santa Monica. In Connections, Taylor draws on the overlooked surfaces of the built environment—patched walls, eroded building facades, layered paint, and improvised architectural repairs—as a point of departure for a materially driven abstraction. Her paintings echo the visual language of conservation and adaptation, where surfaces record time through accumulation, interruption, and revision. The Nüart Gallery is located at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Avenue #B4, Santa Monica, CA 90404
Working exclusively in acrylic, Taylor builds and dismantles her compositions through layering, masking, scraping, and repainting. The resulting images often suggest collage, though they remain entirely painterly constructions. Areas of dense texture are set against quieter planes of color, creating a dynamic oscillation between disruption and cohesion.
Throughout the work, repair operates as both process and metaphor. Like the urban surfaces that inspire them, these paintings bear traces of adjustment and continuity; damage and renewal. The compositions appear excavated and reconstructed, registering transformation rather than resolution.
