Bluegrass, old time, folk, all-women band!

A new single and video premiere ‘WILL RISE‘ from award winning Minneapolis based bluegrass, folk act, Rosie Daze Band to be released today. The band will perform at the Celtic Junction Arts Center on Saturday, March 28 at 7 pm. The single and video are from their album, Nobody Here But Us, recorded and mixed with Tony Williamette at Minnehaha Recording Company.

Band members are Adelle Hyrkas – guitar, Jeanne Marti – mandolin, Julie Kittleson – upright bass,  Beth Young – guitar & banjo, Johnna Lawrence – fiddle, Evonne Bilotta-Burke -tenor resonator.

Evonne Bilotta-Burke writes music that you want to revisit like the bedtime stories of your youth that left you wanting more. Adding that to the energy the band brings to their performances, well they clearly love making music together and that joy spills over into the audience each and every time. What do our fans say? “I’ve never been to Appalachia, but when I hear their songs, I’m there” & “I grew up in the Smokey Mountains, and tonight you all made me homesick. ”This music is made for the ages.

“Singin’ sweet harmonies from-the-front-porch kind of fresh”

“Recording our first EP was both an accident and an experiment. We thought we’d do some rough cuts of the songs but then ended up liking the result. I wanted a gritty, far away, almost tinny sound,” said Boom. “This time around we wanted a more polished sound but still simple in production. We’re always working to improve and push ourselves. ”Added Marti, “Together, we’ve spent a lot of time working on harmonies that we hope reach our audience.” Nobody Here But Us showcases the band’s work from 2024 and new songs that will be highlighted in the coming year. Their performances have roots in country, folk, bluegrass, and old time traditions, delivered with a little saunter and harmonies dipped in sass and sprinkled with spice.

They wanted to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.

“Inspiration strikes at odd times for songwriters. This song was written after I attended a viewing of the movie biopic of Bob Dylan. I wanted to write about resistance, how people come together in tough times to find resilience in the face of hardships. I went to my “slush pile of inspiration” and saw the quote from the Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos, “They tried to bury us but they didn’t know we were seeds.”

Well I grew up in farm land so as I imagined the lyrics and imagery of this song, that was my foundation to build from. Simple farm land that people worked all their lives for generations. Then the word “harrow” came to me. I wrote it down with uncertainty and when I eventually looked up the meaning I was floored. It refers to the machinery that holds large discs used to open the land and allow growth. I thought wow that’s perfect! But it also refers to the biblical event “The Harrowing” – the sorting of souls, one of the many tasks Jesus did after dying on the cross and before his resurrection. “Will Rise” in the face of opposition and oppression.  The unconquerable human spirit. And with that the song’s chorus was complete.
