Presented by Odyssey Theatre Ensemble’s Thresholds of Invention Series on January 11th.

Odyssey Theatre Ensemble’s Thresholds of Invention Series presents There are Fairies at the Bottom of our Garden, a new work written and performed by John Fleck. John developed the piece after being enchanted by a video of Beatrice Lillie on the Ed Sullivan Show. Thresholds of Invention is curated by actor, director, musician and performance artist Tony Abatemarco and produced for the Odyssey by Beth Hogan and Tony Abatemarco. Channeling the Fairie Spirit of Beatrice Lillie

Once upon a time there was a boy born with a limp wrist who channeled the fairie spirit of the iconic 1930’s theatrical song stylist, BEATRICE LILLIE to battle the forces of darkness threatening to extinguish ‘their’ fabulousness.

John Fleck is a performance artist and actor whose work has spanned performance spaces, museums, theater, television, and film. In 1990 Fleck and three other performance artists were branded the NEA-4 when their work was labelled ‘obscene’ by conservative lawmakers who put pressure on the National Endowment for the Arts to rescind their funding.  They took their case to the Supreme Court and won. Performance art venues presenting Fleck’s work include the ICA London, ICA Boston, Andy Warhol Museum, New Museum, Public Theater, Guggenheim Museum, PS-122, Second Stage, La Mama, Dixon Place, Joe’s Pub, Broad Stage, REDCAT, Getty Museum, Cal Plaza, MOCA

John Fleck

He has participated in theater productions at Getty Villa, La Jolla Playhouse, Geffen Theater, UCLA’s Reprise, Kirk Douglas Theatre, South Coast Repertory and the Old Globe. A sampling of TV/Film roles include guest star/recurring/series regular roles in Orville, Criminal Minds, True Blood, Weeds, Carnivale, Tales of the City, Murder One, Seinfeld, Falling Down, Velvet Buzzsaw, Dead Mail etc etc.

Tony Abatemarco was co-artistic director at Skylight Theatre Company. Awards include and Ovation for Lead Performance in The Mystery Of Irma Vep, and multiple LA Weekly Awards, two NEA Directing Fellowships. 3 time LA Drama Critics’ Nominee for Lead Performance, most recently for; “Rothko” in RED at ICT Long Beach where he’s also starred in Under The Skin, Beast On The Moon, The Price, A Walk In The Woods, And Trying. Tony’s regional credits include CTG, Geffen, South Coast Rep, Pittsburgh Public, Santa Fe Stages, Williamstown, Arena, Folger. In NY: Rattlestick, Public Theatre, Cherry Lane. On Broadway he directed Julie Harris in Lucifer’s Child) & in London’s West End he directed Catwalk Confidential. On camera work includes the limited series The Shrink Next Door, How To Get Away With Murder, Beverly Hills Ninja 2, Town & Country, Sleeping with the Enemy, HBO’s Sacrifice, The L Word, E.R., Frasier, etc. and ten National commercials. He taught at USC (retired) & SMC Emeritus College where he is an endowed chair.
