Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever

Hollywood Forever will host the 25th Annual Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, October 26th. This years theme is Spirit Guides and Guardians | Tonas and Nahuales. The Hollywood Forever website explains:

Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures believe each person, at birth, acquires a tona, an animal to which they are spiritually bound – with a shared destiny and common traits. Nahuales are spiritual guardians in animal form and yet some powerful and magical humans could shapeshift in and out of their nahuale or animal form – especially at night. The Tonas and Nahuales are spirit guides and astrological embodiments of human character and metamorphosis. This year we take inspiration – and guidance – from the Zapotec’s rich artistic tradition of intricately carved and patterned Tonas and Nahuales as we exhibit pieces from some of the most famed workshops of Oaxaca.

Mexican ranchera artist Pedro Fernández is set to headline the event. Other artists performing include East LA legends, Los Lobos, Reyna Tropical, Ambar Lucid, El Santo Golpe, and Tania Libertad, and more. Antonio Fuentes will be the featured visual artist at this year’s event. The event also features a Children’s Plaza, over 100 amazing Altars throughout the grounds, Art Exhibitions, Aztecs, Folkorico Dance, Traditional Dance, Cultural Performers, Arts and Crafts Vendors, and Culinary Vendors.

This will be an all day event starting at 10 am until midnight. For tickets and more information on the event, visit ladyofthedead.com

The Civil Twilight by Shem Bitterman at the Broadwater Studio

The World Premiere of writer Shem Bitterman’s twisty new thriller, The Civil Twilight, directed by Ann Hearn Tobolowsky is now playing in Los Angeles through Sunday, Nov. 24th at the Broadwater Studio Theatre. The show is presented by Plays With People Productions in association with The Road Theatre Company and stars Taylor Gilbert (Homefires, Scintilla) and Andrew Elvis Miller (Blue Man Group, Seared).

Shem Bitterman’s cautionary tale asks “What is the cost of a lie?” as it takes place over a single night during a once-in-a-century storm. The Civil Twilight tells the story of what happens when a popular AM radio personality winds up trapped in a motel room in the Midwest with his biggest fan.

The Pandemic Made Me Do It! A Pop-Up Art Show in Venice

The Pandemic Made Me Do It, a two day pop-up art show featuring over 100 paintings by Los Angeles artist Carole Goldman. The exhibit includes paintings she did in Los Angeles on Zoom during the Pandemic isolation times. She had 10|15|20 minute sessions with models who were located in places all around the world. Because of the limited time for each session, she needed to paint fast, and she did. She drew her imaginative, stunning models with her large brush filled with wall paint creating a particular style which captured their essence, aliveness in an exuberant way.

Carole Goldman has enjoyed a decades long career as an actress in Los Angeles both on our stages and on screen, on shows like Friends, ER, NYPD Blue and Gilmore Girls to name a few. With the current state of the film and television business she’s had a lot more time to paint. She said she is thrilled to be part of the painting community in LA.

The exhibit is October 26th, 5-10 pm and October 27th, 11-5 pm. There will be a talk with the artist and the show’s curator at 1 pm on the 27th. You can find her on Instagram @GoldmanPaints, Facebook and her website CaroleGoldmanArt.com. The Start Gallery is located at 2270 Venice Blvd. LA, CA 90006.
