Death of the Walden Newspaper Co. Review: Driveway Ceiling’s Art School Magic

The brilliant, trippy debut that subverts the concept album.

A Retro-Futuristic Trip

The incredibly groovy indie psych-pop quartet Driveway Ceiling is releasing their debut album, Death of the Walden Newspaper Co., on Independent Project Records (IPR). Available Friday, October 30 on vinyl and special edition CD, this record is a rare creative masterpiece. It is a whole lot of fun because, thanks to them, all of a sudden we feel like we’re back in art school and everything seems possible—even in the autumn of ‘26.

Originally from Trumbull, Connecticut, and now scattered across the United States, the twentysomething quartet’s first full-length is an almost-concept album. It offers a heady brew of trippy sunshine pop with tinges of Tropicalia and art rock. This 15-song, 44-minute collection of modern psychedelic delicacies is chock-full of melodies, harmonies, spoken-word interludes, and appearances from the elusive “Mr. Walden” himself.

Reviving Mr. Walden

To record the album, the members of Driveway Ceiling gathered from impressive distances in a Pennsylvania house with the sole intent of letting everything out into the open air. They put a Batman towel on the snare drum and pulled their guitar straps up a little too high, just like they used to do on TV.

Then, they revived Mr. Walden—a Hearst-like media tycoon made astonishingly redeemable by the powers of rhythm and melody. If that sounds unlikely, you need to spend time with this record. It resurrects and subverts the concept of a concept album almost sixty years after Sgt. Pepper and The Village Green Preservation Society.

Polestars and Packaging

The Beatles and The Kinks—by way of The Apples in Stereo and Elf Power—act as polestars whenever the four members convene to weave their sounds together. The band looks both backward and forward, finding a balance between the best of ‘60s and ‘90s sonic trips while speaking resolutely to today.

Previously released digitally, Death of the Walden Newspaper Co. makes its highly anticipated physical debut on Friday, October 30.
