Kansas City’s RxGhost Drop New Single “Subway”

Album cover that looks like overexposed figure for the band RXGhost

KCMO stalwart, guitarist Jen Kean joins the band

Kansas City’s premier architects of “danger pop” are back with a vengeance. RxGhost has officially released “Subway,” a high-octane lead single that previews their forthcoming fall album, Upkeep. While the track delivers the band’s signature blend of shoegaze haze and post-punk grit, it also marks a major milestone: the official studio debut of KC local stalwart, guitarist Jen Kean.

Kean is a staple of the KCMO underground, having spent years crossing paths with the city’s best through her former post-rock outfit, Still Ill. After more than a year as a fixture in RxGhost’s live lineup, her atmospheric lead work has finally been captured on record, adding a “new dimension” to the band’s immersive sound. Her guitar parts float through the reverb-soaked atmosphere, creating a “masterclass in tension and release” that captures the band’s evolution.

The track itself is a moody, shimmering anthem that echoes the melodic tension of The Strokes, the layered textures of The Cure, and the experimental noise of Sonic Youth. Lyrically, frontman Josh Thomas remains “heady and heartfelt,” taking aim at the manufactured fear and media-driven scapegoating often directed at urban life.

Subway” is available now on all digital platforms. Look for the full-length release of Upkeep arriving this fall on vinyl and cassette.
