A Dialogue in Matter: The Reciprocal Magic of Stubblefield and Bernardo
Katie Stubblefield’s ‘Marking Matter’ and Venus Bernardo’s ‘A Matter of Perspective’ now open through August 9
In a gesture of synchronized kismet or pure curatorial genius, the two newest exhibitions at Matter Studio Gallery sing an opera of reciprocity to each other despite the artists’ divergent backgrounds.
The synthesized marks of Stubblefield’s industrial and stylized drawings on plexiglass create an almost musical sensation; one can imagine hearing the clanging and crunching of the machines. They feel like a cartographic rendition of memories, or a physicist’s notes on space and time—a time and place long forgotten but carved into our collective DNA.
Bernardo’s photography delves into our subconscious and plays with our imagination, tempting us to look beyond what we see with the eye to what the image is whispering to us. It reminds us not just of playfulness, but of the beauty of the human spirit and the adventure of being alive.
I found myself moving back and forth between the exhibitions as I digested the relationship between these two shows. They are really worth checking out.
