The Creative Asylum Podcast Celebrates First Anniversary This Month

All-Star Lineup Includes Patty Schemel, Colin Newman, Robyn Hitchcock, and Paul Leary

The Creative Asylum Podcast, a weekly show dedicated to candid conversations with creators across all artistic mediums, announced today it is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. To mark the milestone, host Daniel House has rolled out a powerhouse September lineup featuring legendary figures from the punk, grunge, alternative, and post-punk scenes.

Launched in September 2025, the podcast is available on all major audio platforms with a heavy emphasis on its video edition on YouTube.

A Haven for the Creative Impulse

Hosted by musician and music industry veteran Daniel House—co-founder of proto-grunge pioneers Skin Yard and owner of the influential C/Z Records—the podcast avoids strict genre definitions. Instead, it offers unscripted, deep-dive discussions with musicians, actors, filmmakers, cartoonists, and visual artists. The core mission is exploring the attitudes, intentions, and everyday strategies required to live authentically and keep artistic drives alive.

“The idea behind the Creative Asylum Podcast was to discuss what drives creativity in life, what it takes to be a creative person, and how to maintain creative longevity,” says House. “I’ve always been adamant that this not be a strictly music-centric podcast. Musicians comprise a significant number of the episodes purely because of my background, but it’s incredibly satisfying to know we have spoken with a wide range of creators to identify what makes them tick.”

Reflecting on Year One

In its first 12 months, the show has compiled a virtual Who’s Who of alternative culture icons. Past guests include Margaret Cho, Moon Zappa, Gina Gershon, Hiro Yamamoto (Soundgarden), Chad Channing (Nirvana), Joe Lally (Fugazi), punk legend Alice Bag, and cartoonist Peter Bagge.

Looking forward into its second year, House aims to expand the show’s reach with bigger names, hidden gems, and unexpected disruptors. Ultimately, he hopes the show provides a necessary push for listeners hesitating to take their own artistic leaps of faith.

The Influence of Grunge

House brings deep counter-culture credibility to the microphone. From 1985 to 1991, he played bass for Skin Yard, a seminal Seattle band that heavily influenced contemporaries like Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, and Green River. The band’s 1987 self-titled debut album is currently slated for a 40th-anniversary remastered re-release in 2027, helmed by guitarist and producer Jack Endino.

Following his time in the band, House ran C/Z Records, the independent label responsible for launching or releasing pivotal early work from the Melvins, Soundgarden, Built to Spill, 7 Year Bitch, and The Gits.
