Lights, Camera, Civic Action: June 20 – 22 with Hybrid Screenings Nationwide
In an era when truth is under siege and public institutions are on the chopping block, a powerful chorus of filmmakers, educators, and activists is coming together to stand up for democracy—one story at a time.
The 2nd Annual Defense of Democracy Film Festival, returns for its 2nd year June 20–22, 2025, with a bold slate of films focused on the frontlines of American civic life. DofD Film Festival is a hybrid festival rare in form and urgent in purpose, offering both in-person community screenings and nationwide virtual access through a curated, on-demand platform. Whether hosting a living room discussion or tuning in from across the country, audiences can screen one film or purchase a $50 ticket bundle to access the full slate of finalist selections. This year the festival is chaired by Addison Witt—former Hollywood talent manager, TV personality, actor, and board member of the Burbank International Film Festival.
“Our festival is more than watching films,” said Karen Svoboda, Executive Director of Defense of Democracy. “It’s about sparking action. These stories highlight real people—students, parents, educators, and everyday citizens—who are standing up against censorship, disinformation, and the erosion of civil liberties.”
This year’s festival lineup features award-winning documentaries, youth-directed shorts from the Youth Civic Voices program, and exclusive live events—including a national filmmaker roundtable on June 24 featuring creators from Scars of a Putsch, Backpack Full of Cash, Banned Together, Closure, and more.
“We believe film is one of the most powerful tools for social change,” said Addison Witt. “And this year’s selections are not just informative—they’re transformational.”
