The “Declaration of Conscience”: A Defining Act of Political Courage

At a time when political intimidation and fear often silence dissent, International City Theatre (ICT) presents a production that mirrors the pivotal challenges of our modern era. Opening August 28 and running through September 13, the Los Angeles premiere of Joe DiPietro’s “Conscience” brings to life the story of Senator Margaret Chase Smith, the woman who dared to stand alone against the tide of her own party.

A Profile in Courage

In 1950, Margaret Chase Smith was the only woman serving among the 96 members of the U.S. Senate. On June 1 of that year, she delivered her famous “Declaration of Conscience,” becoming the first to publicly rebuke Senator Joseph McCarthy on the Senate floor.

The play highlights the immense personal cost of speaking truth to power. As playwright Joe DiPietro notes, Smith’s act was particularly electrifying because she was a moderate conservative and a fellow Republican challenging McCarthy at the absolute height of his power. Her decision to prioritize conviction over party loyalty remains one of the most remarkable events in American political history.

The Production

Directed and produced by caryn desai, this fast-paced and emotionally charged drama stars Sharon Gardner as Smith and Jon Root as McCarthy. The cast is rounded out by Dylan Wittrock as Smith’s aide, William Lewis, Jr., and Hollis Dohr as Jean Kerr, McCarthy’s assistant.

This production serves as a timely exploration of political courage and personal conviction, reminding audiences of the vital importance of the individual conscience in the face of institutional pressure.
