LAPR Opens Its Renowned Archives to Create a Live, Experimental Tracking Space for Film, TV, and Game Scoring
LA Percussion Rentals & Recording (LAPR) has transitioned from an instrument provider to a one-stop tracking solution by launching an in-house recording studio directly within its warehouse. This facility is designed for media composers working across film, television, and games who require a live tracking environment for anything from solo multi-tracking to intimate ensemble sessions.
“We wanted to remove the barriers between a composer’s imagination and the final recording,” says Abby Savell, Founder and CEO of LA Percussion Rentals. “Instead of staring at an empty room waiting for a truck to arrive, creators can walk directly onto our warehouse floor. It is a massive sonic playground!”
Solving Logistical Pain Points: Zero Cartage
The most significant operational advantage for production teams is the complete elimination of cartage fees. Traditionally, recording large-scale or specialized percussion requires significant budget allocation for instrument transport and trucking coordination, packing logistics and gear handling, wait times associated with gear arrival at external scoring stages.
By recording at the source, these logistical barriers are removed, providing an agile, budget-friendly alternative to traditional Hollywood scoring stages.

Direct Access to the Archive
The studio is housed alongside an unparalleled inventory of premier orchestral gear, rare world instruments, and the historic Emil Richards collection. For composers, this proximity allows for a unique sound exploration workflow:
- Creators can audition and swap rare timbres in the room before committing to a tracking session.
- The facility is staffed by professional percussionists who assist with instrument selection and creative exploration, suggesting ways to find specific sounds within the collection.
- This inventory was recently utilized by composer Daniel Pemberton to develop unique wooden and metal textures for the Project Hail Mary score.
Operational Context
Founded in 2004, LAPR remains a cornerstone of the Southern California film industry. The addition of the recording studio allows the company to provide direct access to its depot, which has historically supplied gear to major scoring stages and world tours. Instead of waiting for a truck to arrive at an empty room, composers can now begin tracking immediately upon entering the warehouse floor.
