From the Lecture Hall to the Main Stage: Silver Summer’s Die of Love is a Masterclass in Cinematic Rock

Tenured in the Art of the Anthem

If you’ve been waiting for a record that makes you want to shut out the world and dance with your tribe—remembering a time when we believed that ‘we were endless then’—the wait is over. Silver Summer has released their debut full-length album, “Die of Love” via Precious Metals Records.

The Professors of Rock ‘n’ Roll

While Silver Summer delivers high-energy anthems, the band’s foundation is built on a level of expertise rarely seen in a debut release. Based in the bustling college town of Mankato, the group features a lineup of “seasoned” musicians who literally teach the craft.

The Mankato, MN quartet led by Colin Scharf (vocals, guitars, piano), Hanna Cesario (vocals, synth, piano), Ed Avila (bass, piano), and Tyler Vaughan (drums) tracked DIE OF LOVE at Gold Mine Studios throughout 2024. While the album captures a raw, rebellious energy, the band’s foundation is built on a level of expertise rarely seen in a debut release. This “seasoned group of musicians” leads dual lives as both artists and academics:

The academic edge:

The rhythm section is anchored by two MSU, Mankato professors. Ed Avila, a tenured English professor and published author, brings a deep “New Wave” pedigree from his days in the late-80s LA group New Tribe, which famously broke Van Halen’s record for sold-out shows at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. Tyler Vaughan, also a professor, acts as a “chameleon behind the kit,” providing the “percussion prowess” to shift from subtle backbeats to stadium anthems.

Hanna Cesario is the silver lining in Silver Summer’s fresh and nostalgic sound. Especially in our favorite track “Princess Bitch” which could possibly be Pink Floyd and Berlin’s love child. With roots in classical and jazz, her “excellent ear for harmony, chord voicings, and arrangement” is cited as the key to elevating Silver Summer’s music into something truly ethereal and jubilant.

A High-Definition Rebellion: Where 1985 Meets 2026

The album’s polished, cinematic sound is the result of a vision so compelling it earned the backing of five major arts grants, including three from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This isn’t “safe” music; it’s a high-definition rebellion. The support provided frontman Colin Scharf the resources to meticulously craft a sound where the rebellious spirit of the late-80s Clash and New Order meets the modern, atmospheric textures of Frank Ocean and Caroline Polachek.

This fusion of modern art-pop and classic New Wave allows the band to explore a massive “dynamic range,” blending the gritty energy of the past with the shimmering, ethereal production of the present.

Jubilant Harmonies and John Hughes Vibes

Sometimes we long for the radical sincerity, humor, rebellion, and defiant optimism of the 80s and the heart of Die of Love’s reminds us that it’s all right here inside us. We were just waiting for the perfect new soundtrack.

It’s easy to believe that any track on Die of Love could have been featured in a John Hughes film as the first, last or every song of our favorite mix-tape blasting from John Cusack’s boombox. These songs capture the cinematic weight of being young at heart and alive, guided by lyrics that explore people at the “crossroads of relationships, addictions, and identity”.

The Verdict

Following the momentum of their 2025 EP, ORACLE, Silver Summer has delivered a record that is as intellectually sophisticated as it is infectious. Die of Love is a masterclass in how to fuel a creative fire, blending the nostalgia, groove and joy of the 80s with a modern, hopeful vision of the future.

Silver Summer launches Die of Love with an album release perfectly timed on the Summer Solstice,  June 20, 2026 @ the Ellerbe Room (inside of the Mankato Civic Center – 1 Civic Center Plaza). If you’re in the area please go dance us into this new season of hope reminding us that together in music and love, everything will be alright.
